Last used 40+ years ago, my rigid framed Velo got me through
1969-70 and then off and on while other bikes came and went. In 1972 it was
pensioned off and has been homed in a variety of locations not least a milking
shed in sunny Yorkshire, two houses, a leaky garden shed and for the last 20
years in the back of my garage. It is a military machine which incorporates a
number of detail alterations over a standard MAC: Larger brakes, heavier forks,
reinforced frame, uprated clutch etc.
The bike was obviously laid up before unleaded
fuel and ethanol petrol came in. Everything was free, carburettor slide, jets
etc. I kicked it over and saw a nice fat spark (BTH mag), connected a test tank
(bean tin) and petrol and it fired 3rd kick. Even the 40 year-old
oil could be seen to be circulating. A slow rebuild is planned. Cosmetics will
be secondary to getting the mechanicals sorted.
