News from Holland

Hi all,

Please glance at the above two pictures. Despite the seeming rust on the left one (due to the lighting in my shed), they are the same speedo separated by a few days. This is, believe it or not, one of the reasons I have persevered with MZs, apart from a perverse liking for their cantankerous ways.

When I bought the current ETZ250 (now 300, of course) in 1997 the odometer read eleven thousand and some hundreds of kilometres. Up to 2003 I got it to about 97,000 km by commuting on it. Since then, it had been used for short trips around Obdam and its environs, whereupon the odometer started misbehaving by winding back, usually 10 but sometimes more kilometres per short trip, which mean that for the second half of last year it was seemingly stuck on 99,100 km.

The solution was going on long trips to get past the rewind, which operated when going either slow or waiting at traffic lights. Since the countryside around here is nothing like the Lake District, North Wales or the Pennines, I took it to Luchtvaart, the Aviation Megastore next to Schiphol, to top up my paint collection or buy a few models (my collection of aircraft is now 185, btw). Since the 2nd photo was taken, I have replace the spedometer with a brand new one and now intend to run it to 12,000 at least, then I will be able to say I have taken a bike "round the clock".

Well, it's nice to have a hobby!

Round the clock?
But it's Kilometres, not Miles.
You will have to get it up to 160,000.
Keep going!!!!!!!!!!

OK, but it is a kilometre 'milestone'.

Hi, Terry,
I've got one of them somewhere. It went into storage in 1998 and I haven't seen it since. D504 OYS - how are you??
I bought it in Glasgow for commuting when I was working for Britoil during the week and took it back to Aberdeen. Used it a lot til; it seized. Then rebuilt and straight into storage (along with a 1960 Matchless G12, a BSA c15). The Moto Guzzi got sold, the Trident got shipped out to Brunei and then Oman. The MZ got me back on two wheels after about 15 years. Happy days.

Peter.

Hi Pete,
long time, no hear.
When you return to the UK permanently(?) at least there will be an MZ waiting, as well as the
G12. I still remember almost falling off your AJS when the gearbox problem meant you had to accelerate hard between the gears!
I mentioned in my "memoirs" about the MZ gifted to me for a song because it had "seized". But then, when the oil ring circlip pops out the effect is similar.
My current plan, since HMG is not going to renege on my pension, is to buy a moto Guzzi, possibly in England and then tour around visiting my old haunts.
It will probably be no bigger than a V65, though, as I never did go for any bike bigger than 500cc, so then the lower capacity won't be out of character.
Any pointers re Guzzis would be greatly accepted.
Finally, I think you did mention it before, but is the "ciff" your brother's old bike that was almost capable of leg breaking?
